Incoming provost calls academics ‘the heart of a university’

July 1 is the official start date for incoming Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Beverly Wendland who is already working to make connections after visiting the Morgantown Campus Thursday (Jan. 8) as President Michael T. Benson announced her hiring.

“I am so looking forward to becoming part of this community,” Wendland said. “There is so much passion and excitement that I feel from faculty, staff, students and other members of the Mountaineer family.”

Wendland — an accomplished scholar and academic leader with wide-ranging higher education experience — was hired after a national search.

During her career, she has served as a faculty member, department chair, dean and provost.

“Academics are the heart of a university — it’s the faculty, it’s the students, it’s the programs that are offered, and to be responsible for all of that is a huge honor and a big responsibility that I am excited to take on,” Wendland said.

Wendland said she wants faculty and staff to know she is an approachable person.

“I want to know what they think and what they are worried about and how I can help them,” she said.
