WVU has earned a Purple Star Campus designation from the West Virginia Department of Education, recognizing the University’s strong support for veterans, service members, and military-connected students and families.
This marks the first year the state has extended the Purple Star program beyond K-12 schools to include colleges and universities.
The Purple Star designation highlights institutions that actively serve military-affiliated students through dedicated staff, campus resources, and support systems that help them succeed academically and personally. The program helps veterans and their families identify schools that prioritize military-connected learners and foster a welcoming campus environment.
WVU has joined the inaugural group of higher education institutions in West Virginia to receive the designation after meeting all program requirements through the state’s Veterans Education and Training Programs initiative.
“West Virginia University is proud to be recognized as a Purple Star recipient in higher education. Supporting veterans, active duty service members, and their families is at the heart of the mission of the Center for Veteran, Military, and Family Programs and WVU,” said Penny Lipscomb, Center for Veteran, Military, and Family Programs director.
“Every day, we strive to provide resources, guidance, and the community needed to help our military-connected students succeed. We are honored to serve those who have sacrificed so much for our nation and are privileged to support them throughout their educational journey at WVU.”
In announcing the designation, state officials commended WVU for its “commitment and dedication to serving the veterans of West Virginia.”
