The Faculty Justice Network will host Joseph Jones, assistant professor in the Reed School of Media and Communications, as he presents “The Truth About Race: How History Informs the Present and Why We Must Get It Right” during its Faculty Talks event from 3-4 p.m. Wednesday (Nov. 5) on Zoom.
Jones will examine the history of the construction of “race” as a category and some of its material consequences. Using the concept of path-dependence, Jones will examine the long-term impacts of such classification including how it currently manifests in media representation, education, health and the teaching of history itself.
The session will conclude with a Q&A.
Faculty Talks is a virtual speaker series that highlights the research and scholarship of faculty and graduate students. Each 60 to 75-minute session provides an opportunity for presenters to share their work and receive feedback.
