Approximately 30 administrative and academic units have successfully transitioned from Cisco hardware to Zoom Phone since January, along with the Beckley and Keyser campuses, and Jackson’s Mill.

The two-year transition progressed throughout the summer and will continue this fall, with anticipated completion by July 1, 2026.

Units that still need to transition can expect to receive a 30-day notice before their scheduled migration. ITS is working with identified points of contact in each unit who coordinate on behalf of the affected employees.

By moving from on-premises hardware to a cloud-based service, WVU will avoid deferred maintenance costs exceeding $1 million.

Late last year, ITS began working with business officers and unit leaders across the University to determine what phone numbers each unit would retain after the transition. These decisions were made at the college or department level.

Zoom Phone eliminates the need for physical phones, but departments may choose to purchase them. The purchase of a physical phone does not include associated phone line charges on a unit’s telecommunications bill. Telecommunications charges have been frozen at current rates until the transition to Zoom Phone is complete.

Zoom Phone is a full-service calling solution that will better support a large workforce with many hybrid and fully remote staff. Anyone who has made a call using Microsoft Teams will find Zoom Phone easy to use, and Zoom Phone fully integrates with existing WVU Microsoft 365 services for a nearly seamless experience.
