University Police shares fireworks safety tips

As the Fourth of July nears, the WVU Police Department is sharing tips to help our campus community exercise caution around fireworks and stay as safe as possible during the holiday.

It is safest to enjoy fireworks shows run by professionals.

If you choose to launch fireworks on your own, remember the following tips:

     • Check that fireworks are legal in your area before purchasing and launching them.

     • Only use fireworks outdoors, away from people, structures and flammable materials.

     • Light one firework at a time and maintain a safe distance from the launch area.

     • Never use fireworks under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

     • Wear protective eyewear and avoid holding lighted fireworks.

     • Keep fireworks away from children.

     • Don’t attempt to relight malfunctioning fireworks, and soak used ones in water before disposal.

     • Keep a bucket of water nearby in case of emergencies.
