Behind the Badge: Meet Rick Kelly

Rick Kelly

The WVU Police Department presents another edition of its “Behind the Badge” series aimed at introducing the University community to the dedicated police officers, campus safety officers and dispatchers who keep WVU safe.

Rick Kelly, a campus safety officer, possesses a strong work ethic and brings unique experiences to his role at WVU.

A Bruceton Mills native, he began his career at an unexpected time and place — joining the Anchorage Police Department as a patrol officer at the age of 53.

He returned to West Virginia in 2020, and prior to bringing his experience to the WVU Police team, he spent more than two years working for the Monongalia County Sheriff’s Department.

Kelly joined the U.S. Air Force at the age of 17, where he served as a first sergeant and an aircraft mechanic for nearly 27 years.

Outside of work, he values spending quality time with his dogs, family and friends. He also enjoys a variety of sports and outdoor activities.

UPD is grateful to have Rick as part of its team and thankful for his service.
