The Supreme Court of Appeals of West Virginia will convene at the WVU College of Law Tuesday (Feb. 18) to hear arguments in three cases.
Seating begins at 9 a.m. in the Marlyn E. Lugar Courtroom with the first argument beginning at 10 a.m.
Admission is free and open to the public.
The arguments will be webcast live on the Court’s YouTube channel.
The Supreme Court of Appeals is West Virginia’s highest court and the court of last resort. The five Supreme Court justices hear appeals of decisions over matters decided in the state’s lower courts.
The first two cases to be argued fall under the Supreme Court’s Rule 20. These are typically cases of fundamental public importance, constitutional questions, cases of first impression and/or cases reflecting inconsistency among decisions of lower courts.
The other argument on the docket is a Rule 19 case. Rule 19 cases include those claiming error in the application of settled law, unsuitable exercise of discretion, insufficient evidence, cases involving a narrow issue of the law, and/or cases where a hearing is required by law.
The full Feb. 18 docket is available on the Court’s website.
The Justices of the Supreme Court of Appeals of West Virginia are Chief Justice William R. Wooton, Elizabeth D. Walker, Tim Armstead, C. Haley Bunn and Charles S. Trump, IV.
Several of the Justices graduated from the WVU College of Law, including Wooton in 1971, Armstead in 1990, Bunn in 2010 and Trump in 1985. Several of the attorneys scheduled to participate in the arguments are also graduates of the College of Law.
Those attending the Supreme Court hearings at the WVU College Law should be seated by 9:50 a.m. Business attire is expected, and backpacks and bookbags are not allowed in the courtroom. Visitors must enter or exit the courtroom between cases to avoid disruption.
