Ahead of West Virginia’s upcoming legislative session which begins Feb. 12, the WVU Government Relations team is gearing up to play a pivotal role in representing the University at the State Capitol, where they work diligently to build and maintain relations with state leaders.
The team proudly shares the University’s stories of opportunity, innovation and service to our state and beyond.
Since 2018, the team has worked with the Legislature to invest in major projects and initiatives that enhance our land-grant mission and improve the campus for the benefit of all students, faculty and staff.
Recent funding includes $47 million that was provided to fix infrastructure needs in Morgantown, Keyser and Beckley, and $50 million that was given to the WVU Cancer Institute to seek National Cancer Institute designation. The team was also successful in securing funds to assist students and their families with the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, known as FAFSA.
Travis Mollohan, associate vice president for Government Relations, said the Government Relations team will continue to advance the University’s interests through potential policy changes and funding opportunities during the 2025 legislative session. The team also will highlight the University’s economic impact and extensive outreach efforts, emphasizing its critical role in driving growth and engagement across the state.
“The University plans to focus on an array of issues, including supporting the University’s Police Department, protecting WVU Athletics and student-athletes, as well as ensuring the needs of WVU employees are prioritized,” Mollohan said. “With the rising costs of PEIA premiums, we are committed to exploring solutions that will help alleviate the financial burden on employees and our University.”
Government Relations is ready to assist faculty, staff and students’ legislative priorities year-round, but particularly throughout the 60-day session. Team members can help the WVU community engage with ongoing legislative discussions. Find contact information.
