Data privacy and data security go hand in hand. In support of Data Privacy Week, Information Technology Services recommends these steps for securing your devices.
-
Don’t leave equipment unattended. If you need to step away, even briefly, take your computer or phone with you to prevent theft or unauthorized access.
-
Create a unique lock. Make sure access to your device requires a passcode or a unique biometric identifier such as a fingerprint or facial recognition.
-
Limit app downloads. Before installing any new app, make sure you are using an official app store and verify the developer’s credibility.
-
Use a VPN. A Virtual Private Network encrypts your internet connection, protecting your data from prying eyes, especially on public Wi-Fi networks. Consider using reputable VPN services like NordVPN for your personally owned devices.
-
Periodically review downloaded apps. Delete apps you no longer use or don’t recognize. Check your settings for a list of all apps, not just those that appear on your home screen.
-
Use antivirus software. Employees and students get free Sophos anti-virus software for up to three personal devices.
-
Use strong authentication. Create long, unique passwords for each account and store them in a password manager. Never reuse or share passwords. Add more security by enabling multi-factor authentication wherever possible, especially on accounts that store sensitive information.
-
Keep apps and devices current. Turn on automatic device, software and browser updates, or make sure you install updates as soon as they are available.
