First Ascent offers WVU students enrolled in the last semester of their degree program and recent graduates (2023-25) a unique opportunity to jump-start their careers right here in West Virginia within a flexible hybrid or remote work setting.
This innovative program is designed to support professional development, foster community engagement, and provide access to outdoor recreation and professional coworking spaces.
First Ascent supports soon-to-be grads in the following ways:
Tailored professional growth: First Ascent offers a year-long mentorship with seasoned professionals who are dedicated to helping students align their personal and professional goals. Participants can also earn valuable microcredentials, such as Remote Work Professional and Remote Leadership, that will make their resumes stand out in today’s competitive job market.
Flexible and supportive workspaces: Students can choose from six distinct West Virginia communities that offer modern coworking spaces — Morgantown, Huntington, Greater Elkins, Eastern Panhandle, New River Gorge and Greenbrier Valley. These spaces provide the perfect environment for graduates to thrive in hybrid or remote work arrangements and come equipped with meeting rooms, secure internet and more.
Unparalleled outdoor and community experiences: Beyond professional growth, First Ascent offers a year-long outdoor recreation pass and access to a gear library with mountain bikes, paddleboards, kayaks and more. Additionally, the program encourages strong community connections through local events, volunteer opportunities and networking activities.
Faculty and staff are encouraged to share the First Ascent program with eligible students graduating in May.
