All WVU computers that are still using Windows 10 and cannot upgrade to Windows 11 must be replaced by Sept. 30, 2025. This change applies to all WVU campuses, including Health Sciences Center locations.
Machines that have not been upgraded or replaced by this deadline will be removed from the WVU network to eliminate security risks, except in extremely rare circumstances that will be scrutinized.
If you are a faculty member, researcher or administrative employee who is still using any version of Windows 10, you should immediately begin working with your college or department IT support team to determine whether an upgrade is possible and, if not, to work with Information Security to see what options may be available.
In July, Information Technology Services upgraded all WVU-managed computers that were capable of supporting Windows 11. However, ITS also identified thousands of machines that were not compatible and shared that information with college and department IT support teams.
To find WVU-recommended Windows computers, log into Mountaineer Marketplace via portal.wvu.edu and select “Office/IT Supplies,” then “Dell Computers and Hardware.”
College and department administrators who need guidance should work with their IT support teams or with their Computer Support Contact at the Health Sciences Center. Microsoft will stop supporting Windows 10 after October 2025, and any devices still using that operating system will no longer get critical security updates. All major WVU systems and services, including SOLE, have been vetted with Windows 11, so units are not likely to encounter disruptions when they upgrade.
