UPD welcomes new K-9 to explosives detection unit

Police Dog Chuck

Chuck, a yellow Labrador retriever born in February 2023 and handled by Officer Ethan Stepp, has joined the WVU Police Department as a specially-trained explosives detection K-9.

Explosives detection K-9s serve our campus community and the surrounding Morgantown area by sniffing out venues for potentially suspicious items before large events.

University Police Department K-9s regularly aid the WVU Athletics Department before home football and basketball games by performing searches in and around Milan Puskar Stadium and the Coliseum.

“Explosives detection K-9s are a critical part of our department and help protect our community in so many ways,” Chief Sherry St. Clair said. “We are excited to have Chuck on our team and welcome you to say ‘hi’ if you see him on campus.”

Outside of their police duties, K-9s live with their handlers and create special bonds with everyone they meet.
