SMDS faculty travel to Tyler Consolidated to host WV Math Games event

Middle School Math Games

Erin Goodykoontz, Cody Hood and Vicki Sealey from the School of Mathematical and Data Sciences recently visited Tyler Consolidated Middle School to host the second WV Math Games event supported by the Mathematical Association of America and Neff Outreach Fund.

During their visit, they engaged the entire 8th grade class — over 80 students — in fun and stimulating math-centric games such as 24 and Qwirkle. These games promote essential math habits like problem-solving and perseverance.

The event culminated in an exciting 24 competition where all students participated to see which team could find solutions creatively and quickly.

Aimed to engage middle school students in rural West Virginia counties, this event marked the continuation of an ongoing project that seeks to bridge the gap between home and school — encouraging a collaborative approach to learning math.

There are plans to expand WV Math Games throughout the state in the upcoming academic year.
