Build it Back Better with Wood Symposium planned next week

Wood Symposium

WVU will host “Build It Back Better with Wood: Connecting Urban and Rural Communities with Innovation” from 12:15-4:30 p.m. Wednesday (April 17) and April 18 at the Erickson Alumni Center, Room 203 and on Zoom.

Presenters and attendees will explore the potential of wood products in infrastructure applications, energy savings, carbon sequestration and waste reduction.

Organized by the Constructed Facilities Center, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Division of Forestry and Natural Resources and other cooperating organizations, the conference will tackle the difficult task of connecting urban and rural communities for a greater impact in the future of sustainability.

“This symposium will facilitate an exchange of knowledge and serve as an opportunity to connect,” said Gloria Oporto, associate professor of wood science and technology and event coordinator. “The future of sustainability and wood science is not one that can be created individually but collectively. Attendees can learn about and get involved with ideas for innovative applications for wood, like transparent wood in lieu of glass for energy saving windows, wood frames for solar panels and the use of nanocellulose for packaging applications.”

Oporto and her colleagues aim to inspire individuals and organizations to foster research and development advancements that may empower communities toward a more sustainable future using wood.
