Through a newly launched webpage on the Office of General Counsel’s website, WVU will provide a space for faculty, staff and students to learn about the First Amendment and the unique role the University plays as a “marketplace of ideas” — where those with opposing views can engage in civil discourse.
The webpage provides in-depth information about the First Amendment and how it applies to public universities. The page also answers frequently asked questions, such as:
Does WVU have “free speech” zones?
Is all speech protected by the First Amendment?
Can the University discipline someone for using speech that others find offensive?
What can I do in response to speech that I find offensive?
As always, WVU encourages the free exchange of ideas in a civil, conscientious and considerate manner that is consistent with the University’s rules and policies.
