Guy Hornsby, professor emeritus of exercise physiology and a member of the Faculty Senate Committee of Retired Faculty, taught and conducted research on diabetes and exercise for more than three decades before retiring in 2021.
During his tenure in the School of Medicine, he served as the associate chair of exercise physiology and the director of the Human Performance Lab. He also served on the Faculty Senate for 17 years and as the director of Exercise Management and Education in Diabetes for Appalachia. Additionally, he served as the program chair of the American Diabetes Association Council on Exercise.
Hornsby published two books, 15 book chapters and more than 50 articles on diabetes and exercise. He also wrote position papers for the American Diabetes Association, American College of Sports Medicine and National Athletic Trainers’ Association.
An at-large board member of the WVU Retirees Association, Hornsby enjoys traveling with his wife, Jo Ann. They have taken both land and sea tours around the world, exploring Egypt, Australia, Italy, France, Iceland, Hawaii and Canada.
Their adventures have also included the Galapagos Islands, most of Eastern and Central Europe and several national parks throughout the United States. Recently, they returned from a cruise to Spain, Portugal and Morocco.
To share his passion with others, Hornsby serves as chair of the Retirees Association Travel Committee, where he works with OLLI at WVU to plan exciting trips for retirees and other older adults. Destinations include Finland, London, South Africa and more.

When Hornsby isn’t traveling, he enjoys spending time with his grandchildren, playing guitar, watercolor painting and Olympic weightlifting.
