WVU to celebrate Black History Month

Black History Month Convocation

The University will host an array of educational and community-based events throughout the month of February recognizing African American history, heritage and culture.

Feb. 1, Black History Month Convocation

The celebration will kick off at the Black History Month Convocation at 6 p.m. Thursday (Feb. 1) in the Mountainlair Gluck Theater. The community is invited to gather, reflect upon and celebrate the Black presence in West Virginia. Shaniqua Williams, assistant professor of political science, will be the speaker.

Feb. 2 and 3, Family Feud hosted by the Black Student Union

The event will be held at 10 p.m. and midnight on both days at WVUp All Night in the Mountainlair. The WVU community, friends and family are invited to test their knowledge of Black history during this friendly competition.

Feb. 4, Bus trip to Washington

Buses will depart at 6:30 a.m and return at 8 p.m. Students will have an opportunity to explore the National Museum of African American History and Culture.

Feb. 5, The Homage Exhibit

The exhibit, which opens the door to the African American experience in the United States from the time of slavery to the election of Barack Obama, will be held from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Mountainlair Vandalia Lounge. This unique curator-led experience gives a behind-the-scenes glimpse of how Homage was designed and created.

Each artifact represents an icon, cultural phenomenon or pivotal historical moment, and accompanies works created by artists and creatives. Highlights of the collection draw attention to key figures such as Booker T. Washington, Shirley Chisholm, Frederick Douglas and various artifacts from moments in the civil rights movement.

Feb. 5-9, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority ‘Black Girl Magic Week’

This week-long event will empower and reinforce positivity among Black women. Follow @TheOYDeltas for more information.

Feb. 6, WVU Women’s Basketball Black History Month Celebration

Join the Mountaineers as they celebrate National Girls and Women in Sports Day with a pregame clinic at 6 p.m. at the Coliseum in collaboration with other women’s sports team members. At halftime, the Mountaineers will recognize all NPHC fraternities and sororities for their work on campus. Tipoff against Texas Tech is 7 p.m. 

Feb. 8, 100 Black Women Pinterest and Pizza

Enjoy a night of goal setting and fun at 6:30 p.m. in the Mountainlair, Greenbrier Room.

Feb.10, NAACP Bingo Day

This community service event will be held at one of the local nursing homes. Time and location TBA.

Feb. 13, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority ‘Love Table’

This tabling event will be from noon to 3 p.m in the Mountainlair Commons. Sorority members will hand out candy to bring joy to hearts and to build a connection with students on campus.

Feb. 13, U92 Pledge Drive Collaboration

Tune in at 91.7 FM or online at u92themoose.com/listen for a special hour with the Center for Black Culture from 3-4 p.m. during the annual U92 36-hour pledge drive marathon.

Feb. 15, Black Student Organization Game Night

Enjoy a night of bowling, board games and more with faculty, staff, students and Black student organizations from 7-9 p.m. in the Mountainlair Games Area.

Feb. 17, 100 Black Women: The Women of Black History Kahoot! Trivia 

This Kahoot! trivia event will be held at 10 p.m. and midnight at WVUp All Night in the Mountainlair Gluck Theatre. Winners will receive a $50 gift card.

Feb. 19-21, Tunnel of Awareness

This interactive exhibit will be held each day from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Mountainlair Ballrooms to increase awareness of social justice topics that affect our community, country and world. Participants will gain greater insight into topics of diversity, inclusion, equity, oppression, bias and culture. This event is sponsored by WVU Housing and Residence Life. 

Feb. 20, Black Law School Association Speaker 

Oliver North will speak from noon-1:15 p.m. at the College of Law.

Feb. 23, NAACP Wild ‘n Out

Join Black student organizations as they go head-to-head in their own Wild ‘n Out at 6 p.m. in the Mountainlair Gluck Theater. Wild 'N Out is an American sketch comedy and battle rap improv game show.

Feb. 26, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated Eta Omicron Chapter Heart Health 

Join a discussion on heart health, wellness and health disparities among Black and brown communities. This event is sponsored in collaboration with Minority Association of Pre-Medical Students, Student National Medical Association and the Health Sciences and Technology Academy.

Feb. 27, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated Pi Mu Chapter Black Excellence

The community is invited to celebrate Black students who achieved a 3.0-plus GPA during the fall semester at 7 p.m. in the Mountainlair Ballrooms.

Feb. 29, Black Law School Association Soul Food Luncheon

The “Taste of Soul Food” will be held from 11 am. to 2 p.m. at the College of Law.
