According to the National Cybersecurity Alliance, approximately two in five survey respondents say they “sometimes,” “rarely” or “never” install software updates. Be one of the other three. Keeping software current is an easy way to improve your digital security.
During Cybersecurity Awareness Month, Information Technology Services has these tips to stay ahead of cybercriminals:
• Enable automatic updates. You don’t have to check your Settings tab every morning. Let your device download them as soon as they’re available. Note that you might have to reboot to complete installation.
• Go to the source. Be sure you know the source before downloading anything. Only allow updates or install software from verified sources, and only download apps from your official app store. Pirated, hacked or unlicensed software can often spread malware.
• Make it a habit. If you decide not to enable automatic software updates, get used to updating your device, software and apps on a regular basis. Updates often correct an urgent security issue, so check your app and device settings weekly.
• Use antivirus software. WVU employees and students can install free Sophos software on as many as three personally-owned devices. Follow the steps at freeav.wvu.edu.
