Attend the annual WVU Summer Composition Academy

Summer Composition Academy

Learn how to write music and develop your current composition skills at the WVU Summer Composition Academy slated for June 26-30 at the Canady Creative Arts Center.

The academy is open to high school students and adults with beginner or advanced level composition skills and the only prerequisite is the ability to read music.

Participants will have the opportunity to study with School of Music composition faculty members Matthew Heap, Andrew Kohn and Jake Sandridge while attending individual lessons, group lessons and daily seminars.

Students will work on learning how to write effective melodies for the voice and other instruments, expanding their knowledge of harmonies and harmonic progressions, and understanding texture in composition, as well as being exposed to the compositional elements and style of film music and video game music.

A final concert of music will be held to celebrate the students’ original compositions at 4 p.m. on Friday, June 30, in the Bloch Learning and Performance Hall.
