The last American flag to fly over U.S. Special Forces headquarters at Camp Vance, Afghanistan, will be raised for the first time on American soil at the Public Safety Building on Spruce Street in downtown Morgantown starting at 11 a.m. Saturday (May 20).

The flag-raising ceremony is part of a larger official observance and memorial ceremony marking the 12th Gene Vance Jr. Day and U.S. Armed Forces Day.

Vance was a WVU alumnus, Morgantown resident and fourth-generation West Virginian. Despite being critically wounded during his service, he saved the lives of two fellow American soldiers and 18 Afghan soldiers during the early days of the War in Afghanistan.

Event speakers will include U.S. Sens. Joe Manchin and Shelley Moore Capito, Gov. Jim Justice and others. Musical performances are also planned.
