Panel discussion on ‘Unsettling Law: SCOTUS and the Role of Stare Decisis’ planned

Unsettling Law Panel

The ASPIRE Office, Department of Philosophy and College of Law are co-sponsoring a panel discussion on "Unsettling Law: SCOTUS and the Role of Stare Decisis" at 5 p.m. tomorrow (March 30) at the College of Law.

Over the past several years, the Supreme Court of the United States has overturned multiple long-standing precedents on topics ranging from school prayer to abortion, sparking debate over the role of stare decisis and the doctrine of respecting prior judicial decisions.

Both the Court’s decision to overrule precedent and its decision to retain a precedent can be controversial. This panel will provide an overview of the doctrine of stare decisis and discuss the extent to which the Court is or should be bound by it.

Find out under what circumstances the Court can and should reverse itself, if reversing precedent is unusual in the history of the Supreme Court and, in light of recent decisions, what is the future of stare decisis.

RSVP to aspire@mail.wvu.edu to attend.
