Sprinkler and water leaks reported at many Morgantown campus buildings

A snowy day is shown on the Downtown Campus with snow on roadways and sidewalks looking up at Oglebay Hall. Snow is in the trees and there are couple of bundled up people walking.

Frigid temperatures combined with high winds throughout the past several days have caused multiple sprinkler and water line leaks at many Morgantown campus buildings, including:

  • Arnold Hall and Arnold Apartments
  • Chitwood Hall
  • Dadisman Hall
  • Engineering Sciences Building
  • Evansdale Residential Complex
  • Maple House
  • Marina Tower
  • Reedsville Farm Education Center
  • Stadium Concessions
  • White Hall

While all affected facilities remain open at this time, there may be varying levels of water damage at each location.

WVU Facilities Management personnel have been on the scene repairing any leaking pipes, cleaning up the affected areas and assessing any damages to WVU or personal property. Due to limited available staffing, this process likely will continue for the rest of this week and throughout the week of Jan. 2.

As building occupants return to their workspaces in the coming days, they should report any issues or damages to their building supervisor. If there is an urgent need or an emergency, occupants should call 304-293-HELP.

As a reminder, there are some specific steps you can take this time of year to protect campus facilities from freezing temperatures.

  • If you encounter any cold spaces in your facilities when outside temperatures are low, contact the Facilities Management team at 304-293-HELP so they can investigate the issue.
  • Building windows generally should be shut when outside temperatures reach freezing levels. Be sure all windows are closed if individuals are not in a room or when occupants leave for the day.
  • Exterior doors should not be propped or blocked open because it allows cold air migration, which can freeze sprinkler systems in the entrance area.

We appreciate your patience as we continue to work to resolve these issues.
