Women in Politics and Government is hosting a lightly-used book drive through Dec. 16 to benefit the Appalachian Prison Book Project.
Donation bins are located in the Mountainlair, Student Rec Center and Health Sciences Center.
The Appalachian Prison Book Project is a non-profit with a mission is to provide every participant with a basic human right to education. APBP sends free books to people imprisoned in six Appalachian states including West Virginia, Virginia, Tennessee, Kentucky, Ohio and Maryland, hosts book clubs inside prisons in our region and is leading an effort to bring courses for college credit into prison.
Since 2004, APBP has mailed more than 50,000 books.
Donation requests include:
Paperback books that are free of writing/highlighting and damage such as water stains and rips,
Composition notebooks,
New/used dictionaries, thesauruses, medical and legal dictionaries,
2022 World Almanac and Book of Facts,
Wicca books,
How-to books (art, music, crafts, yoga, exercise, construction, plumbing, etc.).
The Appalachian Prison Book Project has a profound effect on imprisoned people, giving them an emotional and intellectual outlet.
