Ibukun Ogunade, assistant professor of livestock production, has received the 2022 Young Scientist Award for Research from the American Society of Animal Science.
Ogunade’s prolific contributions to the field of animal and dairy science as a young scientist earned him this recognition from the ASAS Northeast Section.
The American Society of Animal Science fosters the discovery, sharing and application of scientific knowledge concerning the care and responsible use of animals to enhance animal and human health and well-being.
The award recognizes outstanding efforts in research related to animal production and/or animal products, responsibilities with livestock and dairy organizations, as well as the effectiveness of the candidate's efforts.
Ogunade aims to understand the physiological basis for the difference between beef cattle’s actual feed intake and expected feed intake. His most recent research revealed the molecular-level changes that distinguish animals that utilize feed more efficiently. This could provide valuable insight into the selection of more efficient animals, improving cattle breeding.
He has published 59 research articles during his career — 20 of those since joining WVU in 2020. He has obtained more than $1 million in grant funds from government and private agencies as a principal investigator, with more than $400,000 of that received during his time at WVU.
