WVU FirstGen Initiatives encourages colleges, departments and units to celebrate first-gen faculty, staff and students in as many ways as possible from Nov. 7-11, part of the national First-Generation College Celebration.
WVU defines first-generation as neither parent earning a four-year degree in the United States.
To help direct our first-generation community to one place that will promote all FirstGen celebrations and events, FirsGen Initiatives asks participating units to fill out this survey by Friday (Oct. 28).
Consider featuring individuals on social media and websites; hosting fun events such luncheons, panel discussions or other programming; offering special mentorship opportunities; distributing first-gen swag; and/or holding special gatherings with members of your leadership team. The Office of Student Success can also provide FirstGen buttons, door cards and FirstGen signs.
The inaugural national First-Generation College Celebration launched in 2017 to commemorate the signing of the Higher Education Act of 1965 that helped to level the playing field for minority and low-income Americans.
