The Chinese Studies program at WVU and the West Virginia Department of Education will host STARTALK, a federal grant program managed by the National Security Agency to promote critical language learning among ninth through 11th-grade students.

Students will learn the Chinese language and culture through activities related to science, technology, engineering, arts and math. Mandarin language knowledge is not required.

This free, 16-month engagement program consists of virtual classes and a summer residential camp slated for 2023. Enrollment is limited to 40 motivated students who live in West Virginia and neighboring states. Successful participation in this program will increase global awareness and intercultural competence.

The instructional team, led by Ching-Hsuan Wu, associate professor of applied linguistics, includes experienced educators from colleges across the country and local high schools.

The priority application deadline is Oct. 15.

Students may also receive college credits through the WVU Access Program
