Campus Read-Out planned for Banned Books Week

This is a graphic for the Black Banned Books Read-Out. It says that at the top of the graphic in white against a blue background under West Virginia University. It also says the event is free and open to the all who value the freedom to read.

The Africana Studies Program in collaboration with the Black in Appalachia Research Lab at WVU and the WVU Center for Black Culture and Research hosts a community read-out Wednesday (Sept. 21) as part of Banned Books Week.

Censorship continues to be a problem for African American literature. Just this past February, there was a petition to ban Toni Morrison’s “The Bluest Eye” in Berkeley County, West Virginia schools.

The community read-out will take place from 6-8 p.m. at the WVU Center for Black Culture and Research, 590 Spruce St.

Participants who want to read out loud from provided books during the event have until tomorrow (Sept. 20) to send an email to sheena.harris@mail.wvu.edu or enkeshi.elamin@mail.wvu.edu.
