University community to mark 9/11 anniversary

September 11 Memorial

For the 21st anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, cadets with West Virginia University’s Army and Air Force ROTC will stand vigil for 24 hours at the WVU 9/11 memorial site, located in front of the Downtown Campus Library.

The vigil begins at 8 a.m. Sunday (Sept. 11) and continues through 8 a.m. Monday (Sept. 12).

Designed to pay tribute to the hundreds of WVU-related service members who have been part of the Global War on Terror and subsequent military operations around the world, the vigil dates back to 2002.

At 8:46 a.m. Sunday, cadets will play “Taps” and observe a moment of silence marking the time when the first plane hit the World Trade Center’s North Tower in New York City more than two decades ago.

Five crew members with the USS West Virginia currently conducting community outreach visits throughout north central West Virginia will receive recognition during the WVU-Kansas game on Saturday evening. They are: Commander Joe Pisoni, USS West Virginia Captain, Master Chief Amanuel McMillan, Chief of the Boat, Lt. Kyle Mosman, Petty Officer First Class Brandon Fowler and Petty Officer First Class Ryan Diaz.
