The City of Morgantown is set to host the 11th Annual Gene Vance Jr. Day as part of Armed Forces Day Saturday (May 21). You can watch this year’s virtual celebration on the Foundation's website or YouTube.
The event will honor and pay tribute to:
The people and soldiers of Ukraine.
American soldiers and their allies presently serving.
Fallen veterans and those severely wounded who have sacrificed much protecting American values and way of life.
All those on the frontlines of the pandemic and those who have died.
Among the virtual event speakers are President Gordon Gee, Senators Joe Manchin III and Shelley Moore Capito and Governor Jim Justice. Musical performances will come from the 249th Army Band and other musicians.
Sgt. Vance was killed in action May 19, 2002, during Operation Enduring Freedom when his unit came under fire while on patrol in eastern Afghanistan. Despite his critical injuries, Sgt. Vance saved the lives of two fellow Americans and 18 Afghani soldiers. He was awarded the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, Achievement Medal, Reserve Good Conduct Medal and the National Defense Service Medal.
