Four students win SpeakWrite Writing Appalachia Contest

Four students were honored for their excellent writing about Appalachia as part of the  SpeakWrite Writing Appalachia Contest held during WVU Mountaineer Week. 

First and second place winners were awarded hand-crafted wooden pens made by an Arts & Craft Fair artisan using wood reclaimed from Woodburn Hall and the honorable mention received a certificate of honor.

First-place winner: Ross Liggett, "Always at Six”

Second-place winners: Lauren Pauley, Excerpt from "Ghosts in Trees" and Brandi Hall, "Flame" 

Honorable mention: Heather Robinson, "Food Injustices of the Past and Future" 

The Writing Appalachia contest celebrates student writing of all forms: scholarly essays, short creative works, editorials, how-to manuals, engaging research reports, science blogs or any other written text that focuses on Appalachia in some way.
