University community invited to State of Diversity address

Meshea Poore

Meshea L. Poore, Esq., vice president for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, will deliver the annual State of Diversity Address at the College of Law’s Fitzsimmons Hall at noon tomorrow (Oct. 12). The address will also be livestreamed on the College of Law’s YouTube channel.

“I look forward to updating our community on the status of WVU’s diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives,” Poore said. “It’s also imperative for us to look for our opportunities to improve and grow, individually and as an institution. As we prepare our students to participate as global citizens, it’s important that we help them become their best selves and give them the knowledge, skills and tools to navigate through and thrive in a diverse world.”

A long-time champion of underrepresented people, Poore is an attorney and a former public defender who served in the WV House of Delegates from 2009-14. She is also an accomplished and sought-after motivational speaker, public and political leadership consultant and strategist. In 2017, she became the first African American woman named president of the West Virginia State Bar since its 1947 founding.

Poore also serves as the president of the Big 12 Association of Diversity Officers in Higher Education and a member of the executive committee for the Commission on Access, Diversity and Excellence for the Association of Public and Land-Grant Universities.
