Genetic sequencing of COVID-19 testing samples continues to detect cases of B.1.1.7 (UK variant) and B.1.427/B.1.429, two forms collectively dubbed the “California variant” in the Morgantown area and in the WVU community population.

The West Virginia Bureau for Public Health is recommending that close contacts of an individual who has tested positive for a COVID-19 virus variant should be quarantined for a full 14 days due to the increased transmission of the variants. University officials will follow this recommendation.

Information regarding WVU’s testing, quarantine and isolation protocol can be found on the Return to Campus: Public Health and Safety web page. If you test positive or are a close contact of someone who tests positive with a variant, please follow the guidance and instructions that you receive from the local health department, WVU Student Health or the CARE Team.

The University also reminds faculty, staff and students that doubling up on masks can be particularly valuable if you find yourself in an environment when you want extra protection.

You may contact the CARE Team with specific questions at CareServices@mail.wvu.edu.
