WVU will use self-swabbing as part of spring return-to-campus COVID-19 testing

To expedite COVID-19 testing and make the process less invasive for certain patients, WVU will instruct some faculty, staff and students to perform a self-swab to collect their nasal sample as part of spring return-to-campus testing.

Upon entering the Mountainlair and WVU Student Recreation Center testing sites, some students, faculty and staff may be directed to a self-swab lane where they will check in and receive a registration packet along with instructions for performing a self-swab test.

The registration packet will contain one swab packet, one collection tube and a card for later use in accessing test results.

After following the instructions for performing a self-swab test, students, faculty and staff will deposit their test bags into the designated containers and follow the exit signs to leave the testing area.

The entire self-swab process should take less than five minutes to complete. And as with similar nasal live-virus, anterior swab reverse-transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) tests administered by health care professionals, self-swab test results should be available within three to five days.

Watch this video for a complete overview of the self-swab testing process.

As a reminder, COVID-19 testing is required for all students who will be taking in-person courses and/or using on-campus resources (e.g., libraries, dining facilities, transportation, etc.) during the spring semester.

Testing for Morgantown students will begin on Monday, Jan. 11, and must be completed by Saturday, Jan 16. Further, students must receive a negative test result before classes start on Jan. 19, or they will not be allowed into the classroom for instruction.

Similarly, COVID-19 testing is required for all Morgantown faculty and staff working on campus this spring in a full-time or hybrid capacity.

Faculty and staff will have access to preliminary COVID-19 testing on Friday, Jan. 8, and Saturday, Jan. 9, at the Mountainlair. Faculty and staff also may test through Saturday, Jan. 16, at the WVU Student Recreation Center.

If you haven’t already done so, be sure to register for testing by visiting StarRez (WVU’s housing portal) at myhousing.wvu.edu and following these instructions.
