In Spring 2020, the WVU Office of the Provost launched its Most Valuable Player Awards to recognize outstanding teaching during the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition to teaching, the awards program has expanded to honor outstanding service efforts that have supported our institution’s academic mission during this unprecedented time.

The Service MVP Awards recognize individuals of both formal team and informal collaborations who provided a community-based approach to solving never-before-seen challenges in higher education due to the pandemic. These honorees collectively created the structure, support and resources to keep our academic engine running despite a global pandemic.

Each recipient is listed on the MVP Awards website under Service MVP Awards and will receive a limited edition WVU MVP lapel pin and information card. Past Teaching MVP Award recipients will be sent a lapel pin as well.

“Each and every one of the Service MVP Award recipients played a valuable role in ensuring the ongoing success of WVU’s academic mission,” said Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Maryanne Reed. “These are the people behind the scenes who supported our transitions to remote instruction, our return to a safe but physically distanced campus and the myriad changes to our academic calendar and schedule. My team and I are honored to recognize these individuals who worked tirelessly to ensure a successful spring, summer and fall semester despite the COVID-19 pandemic.”

Recipients include team members from the WVU Teaching and Learning Commons, WVU Online, the Registrar’s Office, Strategic Initiatives, as well as health and safety experts from across campus. Recipients are honored within one of the following categories:

  • Service MVP Award for Academic Services and Support – In honor of their steadfast commitment to ensuring our faculty, instructors and students were prepared for remote learning and an online teaching environment and for their endless hours of support, creation of new resources and commitment to serving WVU’s academic community.

  • Service MVP Award for Academic Scheduling – In honor of their tireless attention to detail and facilitation of semester course schedules and socially distanced classrooms, as well as their ability to identify and overcome procedural obstacles through collaboration, communication and teamwork.

  • Service MVP Award for Campus Health and Safety – In honor of their unwavering dedication to creating health and safety protocols to provide the needed protection of all faculty, staff and students returning to campus and for their commitment to the public health needs of the institution and surrounding communities.

In Spring 2021, the Provost’s Office will continue the program in recognition of COVID-related research efforts. Details will be shared via MOUNTAINEER E-NEWS at a later date.
