To help reduce the number of musculoskeletal injuries among WVU employees, Environmental Health and Safety recently updated the Lifting and Material Handling Guidelines.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, “In 2016…the back accounted for 38.5 percent of all work-related musculoskeletal disorders.”  In 2018, 32 percent of WVU injuries were to lower back and shoulder areas.

When employees use smart-safe lifting practices, they are less likely to suffer from back sprains, muscle pulls, wrist injuries, elbow injuries, spinal injuries, and other injuries caused by lifting heavy objects.
