WVU community encouraged to attend seminar on regional water-quality changes using a new approach

The   Institute of Water Security and Science, in partnership with the Division of Plant and Soil Sciences, welcomes students, faculty and staff to a seminar on understanding the factors driving regional water-quality changes in watersheds.

Hydrologist Jeff Chanat’s presentation, “Exploring Drivers of Regional Water‐Quality Change Using Differential Spatially Referenced Regression—A Pilot Study in the Chesapeake Bay Watershed,” will be held Feb. 27 from 4-5 p.m. in G06 Agricultural Sciences Building Building as part of the Dr. William H. Conkle Seminar Series.

From the U.S. Geological Survey, Chanat will present his work on a simpler, alternative approach to studying changing conditions to large watersheds. This work describes a simpler alternative, designed to link a regional pattern of observed changes in pollutant export to maps of changes in suspected causes, while keeping “rules” to a minimum. By providing hard evidence of the effects of past changes, this approach can better inform today's management choices and help set realistic expectations for their outcomes.
