Disability Awareness Series to be held

Teressa Oliverio-Frease and Samantha Host, Accessibility Specialists, from the Office of Accessibility Services will be hosting a series of presentations about Disability Awareness. The series will consist of six presentations involving hot topics in the Disability Community. 

Teressa and Samantha are certified ADA Leadership Network Trainers and the content of the presentations are provided by Cornell University for the Mid-Atlantic ADA.

The presentations will be in the Mountainlair in the Mountain Room. There are no reservations required, however, seating is limited. If you have questions, please call the Office of Accessibility Services at (304) 293-6700 and ask for Teressa and Samantha. 

  • Snapshot of the ADA – Feb. 4, 10-11 a.m. – Mountain Room. Build a basic awareness of the history and purpose of the ADA, including the Amendments Act.

  • Empathy not Sympathy – Feb. 18, 10-11 a.m. – Mountain Room. Increase awareness of language and behaviors that enable positive interaction with individuals with disabilities. 

  • Service Animals vs. Emotional Support Animals – March 3, 10-11 a.m. – Mountain Room. Discuss laws surrounding service animals and emotional support animals on campus. 

  • Everyone is Different: An Overview of Disability Types – March 10, 10-11 a.m. – Mountain Room. Discuss a variety of disabilities.

  • Non-Obvious Disabilities – March 31, 10-11 a.m. – Mountain Room. Discuss disabilities that may be referred to as “invisible” disabilities.

  • Disability Wrap-Up – April 21, 10-11 a.m. – Mountain Room. Provide an overview of previous presentations.
