The first Menstrual Equity Coalition meeting will be held Jan. 27 at 6 p.m. in the Mountainlair Laurel Room. Individuals and groups are invited to join us to share ideas collectively, organize and tackle menstrual equity issues.
All are welcome. Snacks, coffee, and tea will be provided.
In November, the Women’s Resource Center hosted two community conversations (“Communi-teas”) on menstrual equity with Planned Parenthood Votes! South Atlantic. At these conversations, students, staff, faculty, and community members discussed menstrual equity issues in West Virginia as well as how best to tackle it.
Some of the issues identified include:
The tax on menstrual products in West Virginia.
The high cost of menstrual products.
The lack of access to free products on campus and in our communities.
The stigma around menstruation.
The use of non-inclusive language while discussing menstruation.
One next step may include establishing free menstrual product dispensers on the Morgantown campus. We also concluded that it was important to establish a Menstrual Equity Coalition that will represent the diversity of our campus, community and state.
