Benefits Administration invites faculty and staff to Social Security and TIAA sessions

The Division of Talent and Culture invites faculty and staff to attend a Social Security session and a TIAA session Nov. 8 at the Erickson Alumni Center.

The Social Security session will be facilitated by Elaine Cole, public affairs specialist at the U.S. Social Security Administration, in two time slots 9:30 - 11:30 a.m. and 2:30 - 4:30 p.m.

Topics of discussion will include:

  • Applying for retirement benefits.
  • determining eligibility and computing benefits.
  • paying taxes on benefits received.
  • calculating spouse and survivor benefits.
  • clarifying the impact of marriage, divorce, remarriage or becoming a surviving spouse.
  • working while receiving benefits.
  • coordinating other sources of retirement income.
  • calculating whether you/your spouse claim your benefits first.
  • establishing the parts of Medicare in which you need to enroll.

The TIAA session "Paying Yourself: Income Options in Retirement" will be held from 12:30 - 1:30 p.m. The session will be presented by Jason Junkin, financial consultant. Topics of discussion will include:

  • simplifying retirement income
  • explaining basic rules that govern retirement accounts
  • learning ways to identify when to tap into different assets

Employees are welcome to bring a guest to each session. Representatives from Humana, PEIA, TIAA and Benefits Administration will be available to answer questions. Registration is required.
