The West Virginia Family Nutrition Program is raising money this month to purchase milk that can be distributed through backpack programs and school food pantries to help address the limits to healthy foods in poor areas of the state. The program teaches children about healthy choices that include dairy products. “Milk has so many nutrients that are vital to growth and development in young children, but it is often not an item donated to local pantries,” according to Kristin McCartney, SNAP-Ed director and registered dietician. “This campaign will help us to put milk on the menu for children struggling with hunger on weekends when school meals aren’t available.” The WV Family Nutrition Program provides nutrition education to low income audiences across the state with funding from the USDA Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Education and Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program. March’s Food of the Month is milk; to incentivize participation, the school with the most donors will receive a Yoga and Yogurt party sponsored by the Family Nutrition Program.
