Sixty NCAA men's and women's basketball student-athletes, including WVU's Jevon Carter, who excel both on and off the court were selected as candidates for the 2017-18 Senior CLASS Award in collegiate basketball. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition.

A 62-year-old Maryland man with a failing heart has received a permanent heart pump in an operation performed for the first time in West Virginia. A team of specialists at the WVU Heart and Vascular Institute on Dec. 11 installed the pump, known as a left ventricular assist device for Ken Ritchey of LaVale, Maryland.
