Information Technology Services recommends that employees and students install WVU’s new anti-virus software, Sophos, on personally owned computers to ensure uninterrupted protection. You can download it for free at freeav.wvu.edu.
After providing your WVU email address, Sophos will send an activation code and account setup instructions. ITS recommends registering your Sophos account using a personal email address, which is what you can use to manage your personal devices. Install Sophos on as many as three personally-owned devices. If you have another anti-virus product on your device(s), such as Kaspersky, uninstall it, restart your device, and then install Sophos.
Sophos is replacing Kaspersky under a new three-year agreement. If you currently have Kaspersky installed on your personal device(s), you will need to replace it by Aug. 31, 2019, or be required to pay fees. Sophos will continue to be free.
ITS is installing Sophos on University-owned machines in close coordination with college and division IT directors. Employees should NOT independently remove their current anti-virus protection or install Sophos on WVU machines. Local IT managers will coordinate the change.
