The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at WVU is offering five classes this fall scheduled to allow those who are usually busy with daytime commitments to meet new friends and explore a new or renewed interest. Three evening classes and one Saturday afternoon class will be offered beginning Oct. 2.


“A Horse of Course” will teach participants about caring for, feeding, and handling horses on the ground. You will learn how human attitude and body language communicate with the horse and learn to control the horse from the ground. Taught by Crystal Smith, Teaching Associate Professor in the Division of Animal and Nutritional Sciences within the WVU Davis College of Agriculture, Natural Resources, and Design, “A Horse of Course” will meet from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesdays, Oct. 2 -16, at the WVU Reedsville Farm.


In “Introduction to Forensic Science,” you will learn the fundamental principles and practices of the field, covering such topics as fingerprints, footwear impression evidence, firearm identification, bloodstain pattern analysis, and biological evidence. Taught by Christopher Bily, Instructional Coordinator for the Next Generation Forensic Science Initiative, classes will be held on Wednesday evenings, Oct. 3 -31, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the WVU Crime Scene Complex.


On Oct. 6, OLLI will host “Multi-Generation Travel Planning” by travel agents Chris and Jessica Sharps. Participants will learn best practices and current trends for planning travel with the grandchildren that meets needs of all ages and interests, and get started on making memories that will last for generations to come. The class will meet from 12:45 to 2:35 p.m. in OLLI classroom B of the Mountaineer Mall.


Join OLLI and Adventure WV for a kayak trip Oct. 7, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Explore a beautiful local river or lake and learn the basic skills of kayaking, including an introduction to equipment and techniques.


Finally, on Oct. 8, OLLI will host a one-session class taught by the students of the WVU chapter of the American Geriatrics Society. “General Health Education” will focus on some of the hot topics in health and aging today. Held in OLLI classroom B, the class will meet from 6 to 7:50 p.m.
