Faculty and staff should be aware that the West Virginia University Athletics Department has identified five cases of hand, foot and mouth disease within the football program.
Hand, foot and mouth disease is a mild but highly contagious viral infection that is not uncommon in children and occasionally adults. Outbreaks can occur when individuals are gathered together in residence halls or locker rooms. WVU medical officials recommend students wash their hands frequently and thoroughly and avoid sharing items in order to help stop the spread of the virus.
Hand, foot and mouth disease, while unpleasant, is not serious and resolves on its own in approximately one week. Early symptoms may include a fever or sore throat. A rash, mouth sores or blisters may also develop. Individuals who have contracted the virus should avoid close contact with others.
There is no specific treatment, however over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen, acetaminophen or topical creams can help lessen the symptoms.
