Faculty encouraged to attend event series with national expert on how WVU can make faculty careers more equitable

The WVU ADVANCE Center, along with the Office of the Provost and the Women’s Resource Center, encourage WVU faculty to attend three upcoming events on how West Virginia University can improve the culture of inclusiveness and sense of empowerment for all faculty on campus. The events will feature renowned scholar, Dr. KerryAnn O’Meara, a national expert on how to make faculty careers and academic rewards systems more equitable. The events will be held in the Mountainlair March 19-20.

O’Meara will share the latest research on explicit biases and conditions shaping the status quo, focus on how faculty can improve equity in departments, discuss key areas where academic reward system reform is needed the most, and review concrete solutions to workload equity challenges.

As Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs and Graduate Studies in the College of Education, a Professor of Higher Education and Director of the ADVANCE Program at the University of Maryland, Dr. O’Meara works as a consultant with higher education institutions to help reform promotion and tenure policy, faculty development programs, and organizational practices that will help recruit, retain and advance an engaged and diverse faculty. Her work has been published in the Journal of Higher Education, Gender and Education, American Educational Research Journal, Review of Higher Education, and Research in Higher Education, among others. Her work has been supported by the National Science Foundation, Kettering Foundation, Luce Foundation, College Board, TIAA-CREF and Teagle Foundations.

The events are open to all WVU faculty and employees.
