Research Center on Violence to host White Ribbon Campaign

The Research Center on Violence will once again bring the White Ribbon Campaign to WVU Wednesday (Dec. 6).

Why Dec. 6? On that day in 1989, a male student entered an engineering class at Ecole Polytechnique in Montreal, Canada and proceeded to shoot 28 people, killing 14 women. He claimed he was “fighting feminism” and targeted female students. In the wake of the attack, the White Ribbon Campaign developed, and has since evolved into an international men's organization reaching more than 60 countries advocating for and promoting gender equity and the end of violence against women and girls.

The event will feature the riveting film “Polytechnique” and a memorial for the 14 women at 2 p.m. in the Gluck Theatre in the Mountainlair. It is free and open to the public and sponsored by the Research Center on Violence and the Violence Research and Awareness Association.
