Celebrate WVU’s 150th anniversary with WVU Libraries. Several fun and interesting events and exhibits will be happening for students, faculty and staff this week (Nov. 13-17).

Set aside time to browse the West Virginia & Regional History Center’s exhibit “Flowing Outward and Beyond: West Virginia University” in the Davis Family Galleries. A selection of documents and artifacts from the Center’s archives illustrate WVU’s founding and early years. The WVRHC is open 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday-Friday (Tuesday until 8:30 p.m.) and 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday.

There are also opportunities to learn about two of the Libraries’ current programs: Services for Student Veterans and Art in the Libraries.

  • Monday (Nov. 13) from 10 a.m. to noon in the Downtown Campus Library, Room 104, the Libraries will host an open forum titled “Serving those who Serve.” The speaker is Sarah LeMire, the First-Year Experience Librarian at Texas A&M University and the co-author of Serving Those Who Served: Librarian’s Guide to Working with Veteran and Military Families. LeMire was recognized as a member of American Library Association’s 2015 Class of Emerging Leaders. Before becoming a librarian, LeMire served in the U.S. Army as an Arabic linguist including a deployment to Iraq in 2005-2006. The forum will include time for questions and comments from the audience and campus and community veteran advocates.
  • Wednesday (Nov. 15) at 6 p.m. in the Downtown Campus Library’s Milano Reading Room, journalist Sylvia Ryerson will discuss her work in exploring stereotypes and mass incarcerations. Her presentation, “Public Airwaves through Prison Walls: Restoring Connection in the Era of Mass Incarceration,” will complement the visual perspective of The Divide, WVU Multimedia Producer and photojournalist Raymond Thompson’s exhibit of photographs on display in the Downtown Campus Library Atrium. The event and exhibit are part of the Art in the Libraries program.

Also, as you’re hurrying to finish projects before Fall Recess, remember to take a break and warm up with a free cup of hot cocoa:

  • Monday (Nov. 13) and  Tuesday (Nov. 14) from 10 a.m. to noon at the Downtown Campus Library;

  • Wednesday (Nov. 15) from 10 a.m. to noon at the Health Sciences Library;

  • Thursday (Nov. 16) and Friday (Nov. 17) from 10 a.m. to noon at the Evansdale Library.
