When Duo Mobile is retired Wednesday (Oct. 1), previous backup methods for authentication will no longer exist.
The ability to generate your own passcodes ended June 1, and after Oct. 1, you won’t be able to call the Service Desk to get a one-time bypass code.
The Okta identity management platform doesn’t support either of these past practices because they are not secure. This means that if you lose your phone or the battery dies, the only alternative will be an enrolled backup device, such as a spare phone, tablet or a hardware token.
ITS strongly recommends that all faculty, staff and students consider purchasing a hardware token to minimize the risk of disruption to your work or studies. You can buy these independently online or through WVU Bookstores on the Downtown, Health Sciences, Beckley and Keyser campuses. If you have trouble enrolling a token, contact the ITS Service Desk at 304-293-4444.
Like mobile apps, hardware tokens improve security by requiring something you have (a phone or token) to log in, in addition to something you know (your password).
While the new hardware tokens facilitate your access to WVU services, you can also use them for many personal services, including your social media platforms and password managers like Keeper or Bitwarden.
Okta Verify is now required for all faculty, staff, students and affiliates system-wide.
Authentication for hundreds of applications will continue to change through Oct. 1. You may see either the old login screen or the new Okta interface when logging in. Learn more about Okta, which will enhance the University’s security while reducing costs and complexity.
