WVU Army and Air Force ROTC cadets will recognize the anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks with a vigil in front of the Downtown Library from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday (Sept. 11).
Cadets will also stand post in front of a memorial wreath beside the bronze plaque adjacent to Clark Hall that commemorates the events of that fateful day.
In addition, Air Force ROTC cadets will participate in a Memorial Stair Climb beginning at 6 a.m. at the Coliseum to honor 9/11 first responders.
At 8:46 a.m., the cadets will pause their marching and a ceremonial taps bugle call will be played by Joshua Lugo Zambrano to recognize American Airlines Flight 11, which was the first hijacked aircraft to strike the World Trade Center’s North Tower in New York City.
Zambrano is a member of the Mountaineer Marching Band and a junior music performance major from Chantilly, Virginia.
Army and Air Force cadets began the memorial vigil in 2002 to recognize the personal sacrifice of the thousands of members of the military who deployed to defend American interests after the 9/11 terrorist attacks.
WVU alumni Chris Gray, a quarterback for the Mountaineer football team, and Jim K. Samuel Jr. were killed in the attacks.
