The Research Office has named David Satterfield interim associate vice president overseeing the Office of Innovation and Commercialization, Regional Research Institute, Water Research Institute, and Institute of Sustainability and Energy Research.
Satterfield also retains his existing position as director of asset development, a role in which he will continue building partnerships with the West Virginia business community and the defense and energy sectors.
“Research is at the heart of what WVU is, and I’m thrilled to be supporting the discoveries and cutting-edge innovations that are happening here every day,” Satterfield said.
Ming Lei, interim vice president of WVU Research, applauded Satterfield’s track record of leadership within West Virginia state government and at WVU.
“Over the course of his career, David Satterfield has served as chief of staff for both WVU President David Hardesty and West Virginia Governor Bob Wise,” Lei said. “He has chaired the board of directors of the West Virginia Economic Development Authority and currently is on the board of directors for the J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital.
“When he was WVU executive director for development and vice president for institutional advancement, he exemplified our Mountaineer ‘Let’s Go!’ spirit. As director of asset development, he excels at connecting research and industry. We’re grateful to David for lending his experience and insight while we search for a permanent associate vice president.”
Areas of responsibility for other associate vice presidents within the Research Office have been adjusted with Satterfield’s arrival on the senior leadership team.
Associate Vice President Katie Stores oversees Research Office operations and grants administration, including Office of Sponsored Programs services and implementation of the WVU Research Administration Portal.
Associate Vice President Sheena Murphy leads research development, overseeing research development services to faculty investigators of all WVU colleges. Murphy is also responsible for Shared Research Facilities, High-Performance Computing, the Office of Research Program Management and coordination of the University’s research centers.
Associate Vice President Melanie Page oversees research compliance and security, including the offices of Animal Welfare, Human Research Protections, Conflict of Interest, Export Control, and Research Integrity and Responsible Conduct of Research. Page will also be responsible for research security training functions that will be developed, and she will continue overseeing the NASA West Virginia Space Grant Consortium.
In addition, the Research Office has named Abbey Wolfe as interim director of export controls, and Samuel Taylor and Brady Gutta as co-interim directors of the Water Research Institute.
“This is an exciting time for the R1 research mission at WVU,” Lei said. “I’m grateful to my colleagues for helping lead the charge forward.”
